Computer Storage Hacks: How to Organize and Store Files and Images

Computers are easily one of the greatest inventions throughout all of history. Not only do they provide seamless access to the Internet, but it’s also possible to build an entire business directly from one.

In order to get the most out of the computer, though, you’ll need to keep your files cleanly organized.

Not quite sure how you should go about it? We’ve got all the info you need to know. Let’s explore everything you should keep in mind when it comes to organizing your computer storage.

  1. Archive Old Files

One of the easiest ways to organize your computer files is to archive files that you no longer need. These could be downloadable receipts, former projects, etc. that are important to keep but not necessarily important to have immediate access to.

In general, it’s best to store this information on an external drive or in a remote storage location so that you can free up space on your device. Otherwise, you may encounter a situation where the bulk of your computer storage space is taken up by files that you don’t even use.

  1. Create Group Folders

It’s not uncommon for the average user’s desktop to become overrun with random files and folders. Unfortunately, this can easily cause important information to get lost in the clutter. Instead, it’s best to create group folders that are dedicated to storing certain types of files.

For example, somebody who frequently edits video footage should have an entire folder dedicated to video. Within it, they can have a folder dedicated to raw footage, project files, and exported files. This will allow you to streamline your file navigation and find exactly what you need in a minimal amount of time.

  1. Put Photos in a Centralized Location

More often than not, people scour their desktops and folders looking for a specific picture. By placing photos in a centralized location, though, you can avoid all of this entirely and be able to rest assured that you know exactly where your pictures are.

You can then break up your photo organization into relevant groups. For instance, many people tend to organize photos by year, which is highly useful for someone who tends to take thousands of pictures within a 12 month period.

You may also need to convert image files depending on your storage needs. You can visit this resource to learn more about how to convert HEIC to JPG.

  1. Establish a Logical Hierarchy for Subfolders

When it comes to making subfolders, it’s best to establish some sort of hierarchy that remains consistent among all types of group folders. To elaborate, let’s assume that the main folder is the title of the type of content that is contained within it.

This would mean the name is likely ‘videos,’ ‘photos,’ ‘documents,’ etc. Inside the group folder, though, there should be highly-descriptive subfolders that ease navigation.

A solid hierarchy could be something like ‘Photos-> DSLR Camera Photos -> 2017.’

Within the ‘Photos‘ folder, you could also have subfolders called ‘iPhone Photos,’ ‘Event Photos,’ etc. This will allow you to quickly find what you’re looking for, and you can use this level of organization for other types of groups folders.

  1. Create a Folder for Current Projects

It’s worth noting that there is nothing wrong with having a folder dedicated to files that you are currently working on.

In general, people who utilize folders for current projects tend to do so by the month. So, each month they would archive project they are no longer working on into the appropriate location.

This essentially provides the same utility that your computer desktop does, but it allows you to free up much-needed space so that your computer doesn’t feel nearly as cluttered. This will also serve to improve the overall experience that you have with your device.

  1. Delete Duplicates

One of the fastest ways to cause organization issues on your computer is to leave duplicate files on the machine.

One of the most common forms of this is downloading a .zip file, unzipping it, and then keeping the .zip file. Duplicate files quickly cause a significant amount of clutter and also take up a significant amount of storage space on your hard drive.

So, it’s in your best interest to routinely delete any copies of files that you have on your machine. Just make sure, though, that you won’t need them in the future before you get rid of them.

  1. Keep Up With It

Maintaining your computer file organization is no different than cleaning your room, your office space, etc. If you don’t go out of your way to keep up with it, things will quickly fall apart and return to the level they were previously at.

In general, it’s best to tidy up your computer file organization on a weekly basis so that you can sure everything stays as streamlined as possible. Once you get in the habit of this, it will become second nature and you’ll be able to do it in a fraction of the time that it originally takes you.

Cleaning Up Your Computer Storage Can Seem Complicated

But the above information will make the process far smoother. From here, you’ll be able to ensure that your computer storage is as organized as possible and minimize the time you spend looking for files.
